Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 large green cabbage (cut into 1-inch thick rounds)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil (for brushing)
  • 1 lb ground beef (or plant-based substitute)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 small onion (finely chopped)
  • 0.5 cup shredded cheddar cheese (or mozzarella)
  • 0.5 tsp salt (to taste)
  • 0.25 tsp black pepper (to taste)
  • 1 tomato (sliced)
  • 1 avocado (sliced)
  • 2 tbsp burger sauce or sriracha (as desired)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cabbage rounds: Slice the cabbage into thick 1-inch rounds. Place them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Brush each slice with olive oil and season evenly with salt and pepper to enhance flavor.
  2. Cook the beef mixture: In a skillet over medium heat, sauté the finely chopped onions and minced garlic until fragrant and translucent. Add the ground beef, season with salt and black pepper, and cook until the beef is fully browned and no longer pink.
  3. Assemble the cabbage burgers: Spoon the cooked beef mixture onto half of the cabbage rounds. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the beef. Cover each with another cabbage slice to create sandwich-like burgers.
  4. Bake the cabbage burgers: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the assembled cabbage burgers on the baking tray and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, flipping them halfway through baking. Bake until the cabbage is browned around the edges and has a crispy texture.
  5. Serve: Remove the cabbage burgers from the oven and let them rest for 5 minutes for flavors to meld. Serve hot topped with fresh slices of avocado and tomato, and drizzle with burger sauce or sriracha as desired.

Notes

  • Using thick 1-inch cabbage rounds helps them hold shape during baking.
  • Flip the cabbage burgers halfway through baking to ensure even crispiness.
  • Plant-based ground substitutes are a great alternative for a vegetarian version.
  • Add extra seasonings or spices to the beef mixture to customize the flavor.
  • Allow to rest before serving to keep the burgers intact and juicy.
