Description
A unique and flavorful twist on a classic latte, this Onion Latte Caramelized Espresso combines the rich, deep flavors of caramelized onions with bold espresso and creamy frothed milk, creating a savory and slightly sweet coffee experience perfect for adventurous palates.
Ingredients
Scale
Onion Purée
- 1 small yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 1/2 teaspoon granulated sugar
- Pinch of salt
Espresso and Milk
- 2 shots (2 ounces) freshly brewed espresso
- 1 1/4 cups whole milk or oat milk
- 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup (optional)
Instructions
- Caramelize Onions: Melt unsalted butter in a small skillet over medium-low heat. Add the thinly sliced yellow onion, granulated sugar, and a pinch of salt. Cook gently, stirring occasionally, until the onions are deeply golden and caramelized, about 12 to 15 minutes.
- Blend and Strain Onion Purée: Transfer the caramelized onions and pan juices to a blender. Add 2 tablespoons of milk and blend until completely smooth. Then, pass the puree through a fine-mesh sieve for a refined, silky texture.
- Prepare Espresso: Brew 2 shots of espresso and split evenly between two cups. Add 1 tablespoon of the strained onion purée to each cup and stir well to combine the savory sweetness with the coffee.
- Froth Milk: Heat the remaining milk until steaming. Use a milk frother or a whisk to froth the milk until it becomes creamy and foamy.
- Assemble Onion Latte: Pour the frothed milk over the espresso and onion mixture in each cup. If desired, sweeten with honey or maple syrup. Stir gently and serve immediately to enjoy the perfect balance of savory and sweet flavors.
Notes
- You can substitute whole milk with oat milk for a dairy-free version.
- Adjust the sweetness by varying the amount of honey or maple syrup to taste.
- Ensure onions are cooked gently over medium-low heat to avoid burning and achieve optimal caramelization.
- Use freshly brewed espresso for the best bold coffee flavor.
