For the Shrimp:
- 500 g shrimp (raw or blanched)
- 3/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp crushed black pepper
- 1 tsp white pepper
- 1 egg (beaten)
- 1/2 cup plain flour
- 1/2 cup cornflour (cornstarch)
- 1/3 cup neutral oil (for shallow-frying)
For the Sauce:
- 2 tbsp neutral oil
- 1 tbsp garlic (finely chopped)
- 1 tbsp ginger (finely chopped)
- 1 tsp crushed red pepper
- 3 tbsp hoisin sauce
- 2 tbsp sriracha sauce
- 1 tbsp all-purpose soy sauce
- 1 tsp rice vinegar
- 2 tsp toasted sesame oil
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tbsp cornflour (cornstarch)
- 1 spring onion (green part sliced)
- toasted white sesame seeds
Instructions
- Mix together the sauce ingredients and keep aside. In a separate bowl, prepare the shrimp by seasoning with salt, black pepper, and white pepper. Add beaten egg and coat the shrimp in a mixture of plain flour and cornflour.
- Heat oil in a pan for shallow-frying. Fry the coated shrimp until golden and crispy. Set aside.
- Saute ginger, garlic, and crushed red pepper in oil. Add the prepared sauce mixture, simmer until thickened.
- Toss the fried shrimp in the sauce. Garnish with sesame seeds and spring onion.
- Serve and enjoy with rice or noodles!
Notes
- Make sure the oil is hot enough before frying to ensure a crispy texture.
- You can adjust the spiciness by adding more or less crushed red pepper.
- Feel free to customize the sauce with your favorite seasonings or additional vegetables.
