Freaky Fruit Platter Recipe

Introduction

This Freaky Fruit Platter is a fun and spooky way to enjoy fresh fruit, perfect for Halloween or any festive gathering. With playful designs like mummy bananas, tangerine pumpkins, and grape snakes, it’s both visually exciting and deliciously healthy.

A round white plate on a white marbled surface holds a colorful Halloween-themed fruit and snack arrangement. At the top center, there are six peeled tangerines shaped like small pumpkins with green stems, their bright orange color standing out. To the right, green and black grapes are arranged in clusters, each grape decorated with small white and black candy eyes. On the left side, dark blueberries are scattered around and next to peeled lychees that have black candy eyes in the center, resembling eyeballs. Near the bottom left, red apple slices are clipped together with white almond slivers between them to look like mouths with teeth. Finally, at the bottom right, white strips of tortilla wraps are wrapped around to look like mini mummies with candy eyes, creating a fun Halloween snack display. Ingredients

  • 70g white chocolate, plus extra for sticking on the eyeballs
  • 3 small bananas, peeled and cut in half crosswise
  • Eyeball cake decorations or black writing icing or edible ink pen
  • Small piece of celery
  • 6 small tangerines, peeled
  • 1 red apple, cored and cut into 6 wedges
  • 2 tbsp nut butter (we used almond)
  • 25g yogurt-coated raisins
  • 425g can lychees in juice, drained
  • 150g blueberries
  • 250g black and green grapes
  • Short wooden skewers

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Melt the white chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water or in the microwave in 20-second bursts. Let it cool to room temperature.
  2. Step 2: Place banana halves on a tray lined with baking parchment. Drizzle the cooled white chocolate over the bananas in a criss-cross pattern to mimic mummy bandages. Attach eyeball decorations or draw eyes with black icing or an edible ink pen. Chill for about 30 minutes to set.
  3. Step 3: Cut tiny stalks from the celery piece and insert them into the tops of the peeled tangerines where the segments meet to create pumpkin stems.
  4. Step 4: For the apple fangs, cut a small wedge from the peel side of each apple wedge to form lips. Spread nut butter inside the “mouth” and press yogurt-coated raisins in to resemble wonky teeth.
  5. Step 5: Stuff each lychee with a blueberry. Use melted white chocolate to stick eyeball decorations onto the blueberry or skewer the lychee and blueberry together for lychee eyeballs.
  6. Step 6: Thread green and black grapes alternately onto short wooden skewers to create grape snakes. Attach eyeball decorations with a bit of melted white chocolate.
  7. Step 7: Arrange all prepared fruit figures on a large serving platter. Fill any gaps with leftover blueberries and add any additional spooky decorations if desired.

Tips & Variations

  • Use any nut butter you prefer or substitute with sunflower seed butter for a nut-free option.
  • If you can’t find eyeball cake decorations, the black edible ink pen is perfect for drawing spooky eyes on the fruit.
  • Keep all fruit well-chilled before serving to maintain freshness and shape.
  • Add other fruits like strawberries or kiwi slices for more color and variety.

Storage

Store the prepared fruit platter covered in the refrigerator and consume within 24 hours for best freshness. The white chocolate decorations may soften if left too long. If needed, gently warm refrigerated fruit to room temperature before serving.

How to Serve

A round white plate on a white marbled surface holds a colorful Halloween-themed fruit and snack arrangement. At the top center, there are five peeled small orange pumpkins arranged in two rows. To the right, green and black grapes are stacked with candy eyes attached, forming bunches. On the bottom left, clusters of blueberries surround peeled lychees, each with a single blueberry and candy eyes inside, resembling eyeballs. In the bottom center, apple slices form lips with almond slivers inside, looking like teeth. At the bottom right, three mummy-shaped snacks made from wrapped dough with candy eyes complete the scene. Description

A fun and spooky Halloween-themed fruit platter featuring mummy bananas, tangerine pumpkins, apple fangs, lychee eyeballs, and grape snakes, decorated with white chocolate and edible eyeball decorations. Perfect for festive gatherings and healthy treats.

Ingredients

Scale

Mummy Bananas

  • 70g white chocolate, plus extra for sticking on the eyeballs
  • 3 small bananas, peeled and cut in half crosswise
  • Eyeball cake decorations or black writing icing or edible ink pen

Tangerine Pumpkins

  • 6 small tangerines, peeled
  • Small piece of celery (for stalks)

Apple Fangs

  • 1 red apple, cored and cut into 6 wedges
  • 2 tbsp nut butter (almond butter recommended)
  • 25g yogurt-coated raisins

Lychee Eyeballs

  • 425g can lychees in juice, drained
  • 150g blueberries
  • Eyeball cake decorations or skewers

Grape Snakes

  • 250g black and green grapes
  • Short wooden skewers
  • Black writing icing or edible ink pen, or eyeball cake decorations

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Mummy Bananas: Melt the white chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a small pan of simmering water or in the microwave in short 20-second bursts. Allow the chocolate to cool to room temperature. Place the banana halves on a tray lined with baking parchment and drizzle the melted chocolate over them in a criss-cross pattern to resemble mummy bandages. Attach eyeball decorations or draw eyes on the bananas using black icing or an edible ink pen. Chill in the fridge until the chocolate sets, about 30 minutes. Note that bananas will start discoloring after about 2 hours.
  2. Make Tangerine Pumpkins: Peel the tangerines and cut tiny stalk pieces from celery. Insert these celery stalks into the top center of each tangerine where the segments converge, to create a pumpkin look.
  3. Create Apple Fangs: Take the apple wedges and carve a small wedge out of the peel side to form lips. Fill this carved ‘mouth’ area with nut butter, then press yogurt-coated raisins into the nut butter to resemble crooked fangs or teeth.
  4. Assemble Lychee Eyeballs: Drain the lychees and stuff each one with a blueberry inside to simulate an iris. Attach eyeball cake decorations onto the blueberries inside the lychees using a little melted white chocolate from step one, or secure the fruit on skewers. These can also be added to a punch bowl for a spooky effect.
  5. Construct Grape Snakes: Thread black and green grapes alternately onto short wooden skewers. Decorate the grapes with eyeball cake decorations using white chocolate as adhesive, or draw details with black icing or edible ink pen to create snake eyes.
  6. Arrange the Fruit Platter: Place all the prepared fruits on a large serving platter artistically. Fill any empty spaces with leftover blueberries and optionally add spooky Halloween figures or decorations to enhance the festive presentation.

Notes

  • Use white chocolate carefully to avoid burning when melting; microwave in short bursts is best.
  • For longer displays, prepare the bananas last to minimize discoloration.
  • Substitute almond butter with any preferred nut or seed butter for apple fangs.
  • Eyeball cake decorations can be substituted with edible ink pens for customizable expressions.
  • Keep the platter chilled until serving to maintain freshness and chocolate firmness.
