Apple ‘Doughnuts’ with Soft Cheese, Honey, and Sprinkles Recipe

  • Author: Jack
  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: 12-18 apple doughnut slices depending on apple size 1x
  • Diet: Low Fat

Description

A fun and healthy snack featuring crunchy apple rings topped with sweetened soft cheese and optional nut butter, decorated with colorful sprinkles. These apple ‘doughnuts’ are easy to prepare and perfect for a nutritious treat or party appetizer.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Topping

  • 150g soft cheese
  • 2 tsp honey
  • 34 tbsp almond or peanut butter (optional)
  • Coloured sprinkles, to decorate

For the Apple Base

  • 3 crunchy apples

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sweetened Cheese: In a bowl, mix the soft cheese with the honey thoroughly until smooth and creamy. Set aside so the flavors meld.
  2. Slice the Apples: Peel the apples and slice each apple crosswise through the core into 5 or 6 rings approximately 1cm thick to create ‘doughnut’ shapes.
  3. Remove the Core: Use an apple corer or a small round biscuit cutter to stamp out the core from each apple ring, creating the hole in the middle like a doughnut.
  4. Dry the Apple Rings: Gently pat the apple slices dry with kitchen paper towels to remove excess moisture, which helps the toppings adhere better.
  5. Add Nut Butter: If using, spread a thin layer of almond or peanut butter evenly over each apple ring to add richness and flavor.
  6. Top with Sweetened Cheese: Spoon or spread the honey-sweetened soft cheese over the nut butter or directly on the apple rings if skipping nut butter.
  7. Decorate and Serve: Sprinkle the colored sprinkles over the topped rings for a colorful, festive look. Serve immediately as a fresh, healthy snack.

Notes

  • Use crunchy apple varieties like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji for best texture.
  • The nut butter is optional but adds extra protein and flavor.
  • Patting the apple slices dry is important to prevent sogginess and help toppings stick.
  • These apple doughnuts are best served fresh to maintain apple crispness.
  • You can substitute the soft cheese with Greek yogurt or mascarpone if preferred.
